Giving every child the opportunity to realize their potential

Movement has been found to be the key to the brain’s development.  Without movement the neural network that comprises the brain is underdeveloped, resulting in inefficient information processing and learning. 

Many research studies have shown the significance of movement for learning readiness as well as helping overcome the causes of learning difficulties.

Before your child is ready for school a lot of preparation needs to take place.  Most of this prep takes place through natural movement and play.  The stages of development all start with movement, babies learn to roll, and then creep on their tummies, rock on their hands and knees, followed by crawling and ultimately walking.  All of these stages play an important role in teaching us how to learn.  Through the development of our muscles, we learn co-ordination, build strength and as we see the world through our moving bodies we become ready to learn to read and write.

What if, for some reason, one or several of these developmental stages are missed?

What if a child doesn’t spend enough time rolling or doesn’t crawl?  What if a child reaches school age and they do not have all the building blocks of learning readiness in place? 

Unfortunately these skills build on each other, and if a foundational skill is not acquired, the resulting ‘gap’ can compromise the entire learning structure.  The child may struggle with expected age appropriate physical skills and the conduction of messages in the brain and the nervous system will usually be inefficient and slow, making academic learning more difficult.  Many struggle to keep up with their peers and most do not achieve to the level of their natural capacity. 

The good news is that these developmental stages can be addressed at any age.  If a child is having difficulty at school, sometimes simply guiding them through these developmental milestones again (or perhaps for the first time) can help them fill in the missing gaps and become ready to learn academically.

How Integrated Learning Therapy (I.L.T.) can help
